Also called turkeyfoot because the seedhead branches into 3 parts — resembling a turkey’s foot. The bronze-red color of big bluestems leaves in autumn add great color to the fall garden. When used in the garden, too much water, fertilizer, or shade can cause it to get top heavy and fall over. Provides cover and nesting for songbirds and attracts butterflies. Drought and salt tolerant. Big bluestem is a warm season grass.
